A few weeks ago I came across Buffalo Charcuterie Creations on IG and was immediately impressed with the creative business, so ideally for a friends birthday I planned to celebrate with a picnic in the park that featured F&B from local establishments in the area. It was the perfect opportunity for me to order a charcuterie box.

the picnic not only included the charcuterie box, but wine from Winkler & Samuels & macarons from Fairy Cakes

I contacted Kailey on IG on a Tuesday I believe it was with hopes she would be able to put something together on short notice for that Friday and she was able to! She asked me if I had any requests for the box and we finalized the details on time and place. She dropped off directly to my door step that Friday morning and everything was so easy.

When I got the box the presentation was amazing, everything was organized, labeled and it was what every event planner dreams of (you understand if you’re a planner). Everything in our box was delicious, some items I’ve had before (hello, Brie!) and some were brand new, but everything was fresh and tasted so good.

Here is what was in the box:

  • Brie

  • Eggplant Garlic Spread

  • White Cheddar

  • Red Pepper Spread

  • White Stitton Cheese with Lemon Peel

  • Manchego

  • Goat Cheese with Honey (this was so, so good!)

  • Smoked Gouda

  • Cucumber

  • Salami

  • Fig

  • Crackers

  • Baby grapes

  • Asst. Nuts

Our box was for 2 people, cost $40 and was more than enough food (we had leftovers!) and it was worth every penny.

I had such a good experience that I reached out to Kailey to ask if I could feature her on my site because I want everyone to know what an awesome person and business she has. Check out my Q&A with her below.

When did Buffalo Charcuterie Creations begin?

Buffalo Charcuterie Creations began during Coronavirus quarantine, April 2020 to be exact.

How did it all get started? What made you want to start this business?

It started when my mom wanted to do a charcuterie board for a social distance hang out with her girlfriends but didn’t want one large board that everyone touches. We searched the internet for personal boxes and ended up making each lady a box to enjoy themselves without spreading germs!

Are you a Buffalo Native?

Buffalo native! Born and raised in Amherst, NY

What is your favorite part of creating the charcuterie boxes?

My favorite part of creating the boxes is the artistic and creative ability each one gives me. There is no right or wrong way to construct a charcuterie board/ box and while creating each one I always think of a new layout or item to add.

Do you have a favorite cheese?

My personal favorite cheese is Brie- especially with some honey drizzled on top!

Is there a spread or fruit that you must always put in the boxes?

My favorite spread that I love to put in every box is a whipped goat cheese and honey with red pepper flakes sprinkled on top. That has gotten great feedback from many so that’s a must for my boxes now! I also love to always try and add cucumbers to compliment the spreads that are added.

What is your go to for food items in the boxes?

My go to lately has been smoked Goudas, salami and artichokes. I’m sure those will change soon but for now those are always on my shopping list when grabbing ingredients. Another favorite go to during the summer season has been cheeses featuring lemon- they’re more of a dessert cheese and such a great touch in a summer box!

Where do you find your creativity?

As crazy as it sounds most of my creativity came from TikTok (I guess that’s 2020 in a nutshell for ya!) When I was furloughed in the beginning I had a lot of time on my hands and once I stumbled on some charcuterie videos I was fascinated and was motivated to start playing around and trying to construct some boards for friends and family.

Each box you create is different, how/what inspires you?

Each box is definitely different and the main thing that inspires me is the season! I swear every time I go to the grocery store there is a new fruit or vegetable in season. I love to mix it up to compliment the time of year and also to keep up with trends of what food people are loving that I see on social media’s.

What do you love most about Buffalo/WNY?

My favorite thing about Buffalo is that even though it is a large city it has a way of feeling small and welcoming at the same time. I love always going somewhere and probably running into someone you know.

What is your favorite & fun part of owning your own business?

My favorite part of starting my own business is definitely being able to make my own hours. Depending on the day I can get spurts of motivation at 8 am or some days not till 4 pm. Making my owns hours leaves me a lot of flexibility and allows me to still create time with family and friends during the fun (short) summer months!

What types of events, parties, etc. are the boxes best for? Each order is customizable, how big of a charcuterie box can you cater to for those interested in ordering from you?

The boxes are best for so many events- from girls night, date night, birthday parties, etc. I have made personal boxes for just one person to enjoy on a night for themselves. I have also gotten great feedback that the boxes are perfect for date night, picnics, anniversaries and girls nights. I have also expanded from just the boxes to the larger charcuterie boards. I think these boards would be perfect for larger parties. I have a wedding order coming up this September which includes 6 larger boards to be spread around the reception. Very excited for that opportunity!

What has been the most popular item your customers request?

The most popular items that people have requested multiple times has been the whipped goat cheese with honey. I have  also had a great feedback on adding in a dessert style cheese so it is now something I always try to add.

What has been the most unique item your customers have requested?

The most unique item I have had so far for me was figs! I had never really used or eaten figs before someone requested some in a box. After that I loved them and now I enjoy adding them every chance I get! I am sad they have such a short season because they’re such a beautiful and delicious fruit.

If people want to order, what is the easiest way to do so?

The best way to order is through my Instagram @bflocharcuteriecreations. For those who don’t have an Instagram they are always welcome to email me at KED2696@gmail.com

What has been your most memorable client or part of running Buffalo Charcuterie Creations so far? and why?

The most memorable part of Buffalo Charcuterie Creations so far is meeting all the new people and being able to connect and network all over WNY. This business has given me the opportunity to travel to many places around that area that I normally wouldn’t before.

From The Water Straight To Your Plate - Fresh Oysters & More from Shuck Shack

thumbnail_IMG_4454.jpg

A few weeks ago a couple friends and me paid a visit to one of the newest restaurants in town, Shuck Shack. Located at 301 Ohio Street, right on the water, Mike Tobin (owner) and his team have created something real good in Buffalo. Bringing fresh oysters straight from the water to your plate, you can’t go wrong. There are a handful of seafood and beverage options to choose from, and if you aren’t into the oysters, clams or ahi tuna to name a few, they have classic American food staples like burgers, fries and hot dogs.

Shuck Shack on IG

With the deliciousness of the food you really can’t go wrong. You get the high end quality of food without paying those typical high-end prices. When I went with my friends we got a bunch of items and shared them.

Our Order || 2 dozen oysters | the classic, french fries | shrimp cocktail | and the ahi tuna poke special

Everything was so dang good! Those lobster claws looks pretty good too, and are on my list to try during my next visit.

thumbnail_IMG_4459.jpg

The atmosphere was great - I mean you can’t pass up a place by the water, with good food and drink, it screams summertime good vibes and in my opinion is one of hottest places in town right now. The staff were very personable, attentive and were doing everything they could to accommodate their guests. They were cleaning, social distancing and had face masks on the whole time I was there. You could see safety was top of mind, which is nice to see during the times we’re living in.

Props to Mike for his hustle, passion and dedication to bring something special to Buffalo. You hit it out of the park.

Shuck Shack Hours are Friday’s & Saturday’s 12-9 p.m. & Sunday’s 12-6:30 p.m. If you don’t feel comfortable venturing out you can also order online and take home.

A Sign Of Hope & Good Things To Come

The reason I’m sharing this story is because as a country I feel like we are failing miserably and not learning from those mistakes.. Each day there is more bad than good that is shown on the news, internet, etc… And we are all facing very hard times right now and during these times we should lean on whatever faith we have to keep going each day. Imagine if we all tried to lead our lives with a little more kindness and love how much better we may feel right now. Eventually good things will come.

At the beginning of 2020 before the pandemic hit the U.S. my Mom and our family were hit with the news that my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. While I’ve been going back and forth trying to decide if it’s right or wrong to share this story, I’m following my gut.

I can only offer my viewpoint because I have never been diagnosed with cancer, however both my parents have been and I can solely speak on the experience I have had from a child/loved ones point of view. I can’t imagine being told you have cancer, and yet there are many in this world who hear those words and go through the difficulties of dealing with the disease each and every day, throw a global pandemic into the mix and that does not help those who are already going through a pretty significant life obstacle.

As a child it’s hard to see your parents go through difficulties in life. I mean we grow up looking up to our parents and all that they do to protect us and make us feel better when we are sick or going through a difficult time. When my Dad was diagnosed with cancer I was in high school and I only remember certain things here and there. Today, as an adult and seeing what my Mom has gone through has been hard. Seeing her try to stay tough and do her everyday activities, work and just live the life she has been given was what seemed to be daunting at times because of the harsh chemicals that have been put in her body to combat the disease. And all we wanted to do as a family was help and make her feel better and sometimes we couldn’t. At times we would all feel helpless in a sense because all we could really do is listen and let her know we were there for her.

BUT with the bad comes the good. During the last 7 months we as a family have seen and gone through are ups and downs but what I would like to say has gotten us through it all is our love and faith. As cliche as it is all you can do is take it one day at a time because there is constant change that you go through. Each one of us in the family went through it. To help distract from the negative we focused on the positive. We created a chemo countdown chain and on each link there was something different. A different question each day, like what was my Mom’s favorite song, or favorite subject in school. Other links had drawings on them or simple messages like we love you. Now I’m going to take those answers to the questions and put it in a family book that we can all have.

To celebrate her last chemo treatment that was yesterday, we released butterflies (they are her favorite). It was a fun experience and to us, a sign of hope and good things to come. As she was going to her last appointment a butterfly flew by her, and even after we released the butterflies there were images of butterflies showing up on the television. Some may not buy it, but I’m a believer in being given signs that good things are on your way. While my Mom still has to go through radiation next month I think as a family we can say we are happy that this chapter is behind us all.

A big thank you to Dr. Soniwala, all the nurses and the staff at Windsong Radiology for being the best there is. To my Mom, you have shown us all how strong, resilient, brave and tough you are. Thank you. Thank you for continuing to teach me every day.

My "Staycation" at 500 Pearl | Aloft Hotels

a simple reminder. the vibes you put into the world are the vibes you get back. make them good things. be kind.

a simple reminder. the vibes you put into the world are the vibes you get back. make them good things. be kind.

Just about a year ago now I won (thru an IG giveaway) an overnight stay at the Aloft Hotels in Downtown Buffalo (500 Pearl). I had wanted to use the stay a few months ago but when Covid hit and everything shut down I had put it off, until a couple weeks ago when I noticed the certificate was expiring at the end of June.

I decided that I would use the night as a “staycation” and thought it would be an opportunity to share my experience on what the “new norm” at hotels currently is. We all know the travel and tourism industry is one of the hardest hit industries for Covid and they are doing everything during this pandemic to gain the guests trust again.

So here it is, let me begin with booking the room, I reached out to the Property Operations & General Manager at 500 Pearl, Kate DelGobbo to reserve my room. From the very beginning my experience was simple and painless. Kate responded promptly, answered any questions I had and just took care of me.

IMG_4322.jpg

When I arrived to the hotel this past Sunday, right when I walked into the elevator area off the parking ramp I saw the hand sanitizer next to the doors, signs that said to stay 6 feet apart and to wear face masks. Once inside the elevator there are markers on the floor (in each corner) for social distancing and a sign that says only four people can be in the elevator at a time.

Once I arrived in the lobby things were a little different than when I was there pre-Covid. Social distance markers were spaced on the floor, the lounge furniture had been removed, hand sanitizer stations were placed all around the walls and at the front desk.

At the front desk their was a plexiglass divider between the staff and me. Because recreational activities are still not qualified to open in NYS, the fitness center, pool and Spare Lanes (their bowling alley) were not open. Patrick’s Rooftop was open, however, and I did see and hear people enjoying themselves on a nice Sunday night.

w xyz bar (their bar in the lounge/lobby level) was closed Sunday, but it’s open Thursday thru Saturday’s. Once I checked in I went to my Aloft King Room on the 11th floor. Kate hooked me up!! I had a corner unit, with awesome views of the city (see below for photos and video on my IG story). The room was modern and what I will call an artsy/hipster vibe. Pretty much the vibe that you get from 500 Pearl if you’ve ever attended an event there or just went for dinner/drinks. There was a card on the bed that said the room was sanitized. I noticed a lot of in room amenities were removed to - the coffee maker, coffee mugs, ice bucket, and glasses.

After checking out the room, I went back downstairs and walked around the lounge area, took some pics (see below) and grabbed a water from the refreshment area. Everything in that area was pretty much grab and go items only.

Overall it was a nice way to spend a Sunday night and start off the week in a different way (feeling like I was on vacation without ever leaving my hometown). I had a pretty damn good experience even with the new changes that are in effect with Covid. What you are reading or seeing in the news is what is really happening. It’s a new type of norm but for those who like to travel, and want to get back to it or those who are taking that summer vacay trip, as long as you wear a mask, stay 6 ft. apart and wash your hands I think you’ll be just fine, (please note I’m no doctor and just providing my opinion). Also, if you have questions make sure to ask them. I found with each staff member that I interacted with, they were happy to answer the questions I had, they wanted to make me feel comfortable and trust that they had my best interest at hand.

If you’re looking to get out and have a change of scenery for a night but don’t want to travel, think of having a staycation at 500 Pearl, you can make it a fun night with dinner and drinks on the rooftop all while enjoying beautiful views of the city. Thank you Kate & team for a wonderful experience!

If you have any questions about my experience feel free to message me directly or drop a comment below.

—————————————————————————————————————————-

**I asked Kate a few questions before my stay, see below for my Q&A with her:

During the course of these last few months what are some of the major changes that 500 Pearl has had to adapt to, to stay up to state and health requirements?

500 Pearl has complied with all of the CDC and the NYS mandates regarding cleanliness, sanitation and protocol. We keep up to date with the state and local agency updates and move through the reopening phases as the state allows. Right now, our pool, fitness center and bowling alley remain closed. We have opened Patrick’s Rooftop and WXYZ for food and beverage service. We have social distancing guidelines implemented as well as making sure all property staff are trained on COVID cleaning procedures.

I would say the biggest change has been our inability to do events and the new protocols for our Aloft Hotel. Our housekeeping department has been trained to the Marriott brand cleaning guidelines as well as what the CDC recommends; and we are doing everything we can to keep our guests and staff safe. For example, we have installed public hand sanitizer stations throughout the property at high contact areas. We have also suspended housekeeping service in occupied rooms to minimize contact between guests and staff members.

It seems like more people are going out and enjoying the nice weather now that summer is here, can you share your experience with how the customer response has been?

We are happy that the reopening phases have allowed us to resume doing food and beverage in our restaurants. I think customers have been very compliant and understanding with the social distancing guidelines that we have implemented. I think that they appreciate the measures that we are taking to keep everyone safe and are very happy to be out whether on the rooftop or at w xyz. We require all patrons and staff on property to wear a mask in public areas. As this is the “new norm” right now, people have responded well.

500 Pearl is one of the newest, and hippest venues in Buffalo and I felt like there was a lot of great traction with the space before Covid hit. With the travel and hospitality industry being one of the hardest hit, are you hopeful that the industry will be able to bounce back from this? And what are some things 500 Pearl may be doing to stand out from other hotels in the area?

The hospitality industry is very resilient and I am confident that we will come back stronger than we were before COVID hit.  While we are unsure when life will get back to the way things were before COVID, we know that people will want to travel, they will want to celebrate big life moments and companies will want to meet again.  Our industry has come back before and we will continue to come back during and after the pandemic.

In terms of 500 Pearl we have flexed our cancellation policies in our event space until the end of 2021 and  we are adopting new menus and meeting practices to ease the minds of our guests.  We are getting back to the basics of hospitality. Clean and friendly.  We are staying on top of all new cleaning and health measures and implementing them around the property, and while staff and guest interaction will be limited moving forward we are making sure the limited interactions are still memorable.

Harlie & Me

lover of many things, shoes being one of them

lover of many things, shoes being one of them

It’s been a minute since I posted an official blog post about Harlie. A lot has happened over the last 10 months and Harlie is thriving and living her best life. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March and we’ve all been mostly confined to our homes Harlie has loved the extra time we’ve gotten to spend together. From the extra snuggles, to more walks and playtime, to helping me “work” she is by my side all day, every day. I didn’t think I could love her any more than I already do but she is my everything.

she’ll do anything for attention

From her temper tantrums and dramatic lay downs when she wants attention or doesn’t want to do something, she is still the best dog (for me) and I’m so happy to have this extra time to spend with her.

For all you dog owners and animal lovers out there, I hope you are equally enjoying this extra time you get to spend with your fur babies. And for all the people who have adopted pets during the pandemic I hope it’s bringing you much joy during what can be a difficult time. I adopted Harlie through Diamonds in the Ruff located in Niagara County. They are one of the many great rescue organizations in WNY if anyone is looking to adopt or foster animals.

ink of pine design (thanks K. Sweet for the gift!)

It’s been a while since we’ve all experienced what was once normal life. These last few weeks have been difficult for many, but through it all we manage to find a way to get thru each day. I decided throughout the month of May I would feature different local businesses on my social media platforms. I asked my followers for recommendations this past weekend so I could post and link to their websites below (thank you to everyone who shared the recs with me!). I also am sharing some places I have supported throughout the pandemic. Take a look at the list, many places have been offering specials, discounts or teaming up with other businesses to create special packages. All supporting one another!

Throughout the month I’m going to be surprising people (at random) on social media with gift cards to some of these places listed below.

If there are any places you’d like me to share please feel free to post in the comments or message me here.

Continue to be well & stay safe

*Please note some of these small businesses may be closed or have limited hours right now due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check them out. Once this is under control it will be an opportunity for you to pay a visit.

A Trip Down Memory Lane - West Rose & A Day In Ellicottville

Today I’m entering into my fourth week of staying home during this pandemic, like most people we are all yearning for the time when things can go back to the way they were, being able to freely leave our homes and go about our lives however we enjoy doing so.

For me, I am looking forward to the days I’ll be able to go on random day adventures and explore new places, new businesses in the region that have opened, be able to travel again, the list goes on and on.

thumbnail_IMG_3164.jpg

As I’m sitting here I thought I’d share my thoughts on West Rose - a fairly new restaurant that opened in Ellicottville this past December. West Rose is the sister restaurant to the Grange Community Kitchen in the Village of Hamburg. Owners Brad and Caryn Rowell opened this wonderful place as a second “gathering place for all” in the heart of ski country.

On a Sunday afternoon in February my friend Kelsey and I took a day trip to Ellicottville to pay a visit to West Rose (it was on both our bucket lists of places to visit) and just have a change of scenery from the City of Buffalo. From the minute you walk in, you are taken away by the beautiful decor. The tall ceilings, exposed white washed brick with gold accent pieces and soft colors make the ambiance of the restaurant feel cozy, comfortable and at peace all while feeling a part of a community where guests gather to catch up or spend a day enjoying each others company. The food is seasonally inspired, shareable, comfort and delicious all in one and the staff are attentive, welcoming and friendly.

After brunch we decided to walk around the village of Ellicottville. We went from store to store and stopped at some local businesses checking on winter sales they had going on. We visited a local bakery and winery and picked up some treats for a friends dinner later that night. While our trip was only a few hours out of the day, it was nice getting some fresh air and visiting some places that were new to us and some that we don’t get to visit that often.

It’s the memories and experiences like this that I miss currently. While I’m grateful to have the memories to think of during this difficult time its hard to think what life will be like after this is all over or I should say once this is under control, I don’t think this will be over for a while. While we are all doing our part to help one another, it’s scary to think of what the economy, local business and life will be like in just a few months. I realize that is a bold and broad statement I’m making, but it’s my opinion and what I’m thinking about more frequently now a days.

thumbnail_60357647510__9BECC929-9C54-45E9-BD89-1F7B64771D7B.jpg

It’s little adventures like these that help me get through these long and sad days that I find myself facing more often, its the memories I have that help give me hope that there are brighter days a head, until then I will continue to go down memory lane.

Continue to stay safe & be well,

"Rock Your Fear" with Lindsay Amico

thumbnail_Screen Shot 2020-01-17 at 1.37.11 PM.png

Real Talk: You may have heard me talk or share on my social media from time to time that I am an anxious person and over the last few years my anxiety can go from 0-60 in a blink of an eye. The worrying, stressing out, etc. that happens sometimes gets to be too much and can really change my mood when I try not to let it.

When talking with a friend of mine she recommended I meet Lindsay. Lindsay Amico is a certified health coach and the owner of Picture Perfect Mind. Lindsay helps you address and control your anxiousness and fear in a positive approach.

Let’s continue to be real for a moment - anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older (Anxiety & Depression Association of America) . And lately when I talk openly about my anxiety I feel like others can relate. On another hand let’s talk about fear. How many times have you let fear take control of your life, instead of embracing the fear, you run from it and regret doing that. It’s a common theme in many peoples lives nowadays.

So what does Lindsay do? well it should be more what doesn’t she do! Lindsay studied political science and environmental studies at Northeastern University in Boston, and was sticking with the “traditional norms” that people think they need to do. She came back to Buffalo and being interested in social and environmental justice was a part of the clean air coalition (interning and then sitting on their board). Following that she began working at Roswell Park.

From a young age Lindsay has dealt with anxiety and she has learned to use tools from inside herself to control her life. Let’s be real “thoughts create your reality” and after reading Rhonda Byrne’s “The Secret” (a book that is based on the belief of the law of attraction, which claims that thoughts can change a person's life directly), this past summer Lindsay decided to follow her dream and continue to pursue making a difference and began Picture Perfect Mind.

thumbnail_AP Professionals Event-2178.jpg

What steps helped Lindsay decide to begin Picture Perfect Mind?

  1. Lindsay’s mindset - rocking her fear. Identifying things that happen in your life and the things that held you back and choosing to love over fear. Stepping into that spiritual component.

  2. Training with Gabby Bernstein (May Cause Miracles)

  3. Having practical tools to use for mindset

  4. Deciding to step into a business full time when it lines up at the right time for you

  5. Lastly knowing there is nothing wrong with you if you have fear. Its having awareness and acceptance to fear and anxiousness, being present with this feeling instead of fighting it and embracing and owning your fear to take steps forward.

What inspires Lindsay?

Knowing that she is not meant to stay small or stagnant. And knowing she has a divine purpose to serve others in this life and having the opportunity to do that. Serving other women.

The best advice she gives?

If fear is guaranteed in life, then ask yourself the question, do you want to take action toward something? Inspired action in spite of fear is up to you!! Harness fear as your power

Best advice Lindsay has received?

“CELEBRATE YOURSELF” - Gabby Bernstein

Cherish yourself and celebrate your wins. As a society we fixate on things we haven’t done instead of the things we have accomplished. It can be something small and simple everyday, but celebrate those accomplishments no matter how big or small they are.

thumbnail_61258161_10156180635995965_4536399236048093184_n (1).jpg

So if you are someone who deals with anxiety or fear or both you may ask yourself this question, what are some steps I can take to feel better. Here is Lindsay’s take away’s:

  1. You are not alone. We ALL feel it - anxious, fear, isolated

  2. Recognize the fear and chose it, chose it in a positive thought. Look forward to something.

  3. Take the necessary steps at one time

  4. Take deep breaths

  5. Bring compassion to yourself and know there are people you can reach out to

What are some of Lindsay’s goals in 2020?

  1. Expressing herself authentically. Connecting to the joy of creativity

  2. Connecting with a community of women that can lift herself up as she lifts them

  3. Celebrating herself

  4. Developing a deep faith and patience as she works on growing her business

  5. Not defining instant results as a success

  6. Knowing her own worth

  7. Being kind to her body

  8. Creating a course (diving into all your stuff)

What does Lindsay love about Buffalo?

That everyone cares about one another and that Buffalo is evolving and growing constantly - always something new to do.

What can Lindsay do for you? Attend her workshop at Raw Renewal on February 6th, 2020. “Rewrite Your Fear Story”

Lindsay also does one-on-one coaching work with individuals and has business services available as well. Follow her on Instagram ( @pictureperfectmind ) and Facebook

Fun Facts About Lindsay:

Coffee or Tea? Coffee

Wine or Cocktail? Cocktail - Tito’s Soda and Lime

Favorite Restaurant? Nye Park Tavern - AMAZING food (especially there truffle fries)

At the end of the day you only have one life, don’t waste it on letting fear consume you, instead embrace it, listen to your intuition and love yourself for who you are.

Thank you Lindsay for being the boss babe that you are and inspiring me.

Welcome to Hertel Avenue with HBA's President, Judy Porto-Fiorella

Explore Hertel

Eat. Shop. Play. Explore. Create. Community.

Some of you may have seen this video on North Buffalo that was on the local news and social media channels this past week, if you ask me my opinion I think its a great video showcasing that part of our Western New York community which segues well into my blog feature today. On a Monday evening back in September (yes, September) I had the chance to sit down with Judy Porto-Fiorella, President of the Hertel Business Association (HBA). Judy and I met a few years back when the Italian Festival moved from Hertel to the Outer Harbor and I’m so happy I met her.

(Photos above are from HBA’s FB page)

Judy has lived in North Buffalo and has been involved with the North Buffalo community for many years. For those who aren’t familiar with the HBA, the board is made up of volunteers that include both residents in the Hertel community as well as business owners. The association helps with a number of things from helping businesses open, and helping residents in the area, to the beautification and decor along Hertel Ave. They meet the second Tuesday of each month and our on a yearly term.

If you’ve been down Hertel recently you will see there has been a lot of new businesses and development taking place as well as public art down Hertel Alley. That is the whole reason the HBA is in place - to attract more visitors to the area.

Judy’s favorite thing about being involved is the community work she is able to do - whether it be working with the council members, helping business owners or residents in the community or just being a part of helping North Buffalo thrive, what ever the case, she enjoys it all.

thumbnail_IMG_0893.jpg

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t challenges her and the board face because there are, but they listen to those concerns and do the best they can to solve the problems that the community faces. Such as the parking, that is the main complaint if anything.

When I asked her what the biggest reward is she said it’s meeting new people in the community and seeing what they are doing. It’s a friendly community and those a part of it are always willing to help each other. It’s like a mini family, where we all respect one another, they enjoy collaborating and learning new things.

This or That:

  • White or Red wine: White

  • Football or Hockey: Football

  • Enjoy making - Pasta or Italian Wedding Cookies: Italian Wedding Cookies

To stay up to date on all that is going on, on Hertel and in North Buffalo make sure to check out the HBA’s website and Facebook page. Judy, thank you for being the rock star and amazing woman that you are.

"Risk Expands You"

Experience Life

In Order To Learn The Lesson

And so it goes another year has come and gone and for many, this time of year is a time to reflect on all that has happened over the last year. It is also a time where we look ahead to what we hope to accomplish for ourselves in the upcoming year.

As I take some time to look back on this past year a lot of thoughts and emotions run through my mind.  I continue to be very thankful for the opportunities and adventures that have come my way. There have been a lot of significant changes that have taken place in 2019, leaving toxic and negative environments and hoping that the decisions I’ve been making are leading me to where I should be. I’m a big believer in things will work out the way they are supposed to even if you don’t see it in the present moment. What I take a way are more lessons on this thing called life.

As I enter 2020, I’m ready to take on more risks, because it expands you, “To make a positive change in your life, you often must take a risk. You must tolerate some level of uncertainty.” I also want to learn to let go of the worrying, and things I don’t have control over and just make every day count.

Remain conscious of the value of every single day. Ask yourself every morning, “What can I do to make today count? – Live Bold and Bloom
thumbnail_IMG_1854.jpg

I’m looking forward to 2020 and what it will bring. Stay true to yourself, find your tribe, and accept that you can't please everyone. Be present in the here and now and savor the moment. Rather than dwelling in the past or fretting about the future, focus on exactly what you are doing with full attention

To my family, friends and the strangers who continue support and encourage me, thank you for giving me a purpose.

Happy New Year!

The Week That Was...

thumbnail_IMG_0738.jpg

Tis the Season

Wishing you happiness, magic, love, kindness & comfort

This time of year can be more chaotic and hectic than normal. Some of you who follow me may have known that this past week I did a 5-day giveaway on my FB and Instagram pages. The items were from some of my favorite local business owners in WNY and ranged from gift cards to candles, earrings, clothing and travel.

I’ve always been the type of person who likes to give and help others and I am learning that the more I do it, the more I enjoy it and the more happy I am with myself. In the almost seven years I’ve had this blog this was the first time I’ve ever done a giveaway and really wasn’t expecting a lot of participation because 1. I didn’t really know what I was doing and 2. outside of my family I’m not sure how many really follow the things that I post. To my surprise there was an overabundance of participation and it literally made my heart full that people were reading the things I post and they liked the items that I chose to give out.

As we head into Christmas week I am so grateful for the relationships I’ve made with the people I feature on my blog and for you, the people who take time out of your day to read my stories and follow along on this journey with me. It’s a present I’m so thankful to have.

Happy Holidays! xo

The Bali Reset

thumbnail_IMG_2333.jpg

“Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you.” - Anthony Bourdain

Earlier this year I decided I needed a change in my life, with a lot of things - both in the my professional and personal life, so, when Stephanie and Brandon from We Must Dash posted that they were offering a new tour in Bali I decided this was something I had to do. Bali had been on my bucket list of places to visit and I feel like I needed a life changing moment and that was indeed what happened.

thumbnail_IMG_1072.jpg

I have always loved to travel and most of my travels have been with friends or family. Sometimes I would travel solo, but would always end with meeting someone I knew at my final destination. This trip was different though, I was booking a trip, really not knowing anything or anyone (yes, I knew Stephanie from We Must Dash and Katie from BkindCity but didn’t really know, know them). I was travelling half way across the world and meeting up with strangers, strangers who turned to into really great friends.

The Bali Reset was a 2 week trip that traveled throughout the island of Indonesia exploring rice terraces, visiting temples, climbing an active volcano in the middle of the night to catch the most amazing sunrise you will ever see. Snorkeling in the Indian Ocean, learning to surf, learning to cook Balinese food and bringing home recipes you can make for your family and friends and seeing some of the most beautiful beaches and views in the world. Simply breathtaking.

The trip was comprised of 15 amazing human beings, people who are from Buffalo, Montana, Massachusetts and Las Vegas. And all of us were on this trip for a reason, some to find some sort of clarity, some to celebrate life, some for both. I came on this trip hoping to get answers to things in my life that I am constantly looking for. Not ever seeing or reading Eat, Pray, Love but knowing the concept of it, a lot of friends referenced that to me throughout the months leading up to the trip. What happened though is I didn’t find those answers to things I’m looking for, but I instead came home with a clearer mind, more appreciation for the life I have and a better understanding of knowing things will always work out and align in the manner they are supposed to at the time they are supposed to. This trip made me be more present and enjoy the moments and experiences in real time and not through my phone.

What started for me as being anxious and scared because I didn’t know if I’d “fit "in” or if people would like me turned into me learning to embrace each unknown, each new experience, wanting to see as much as I possibly could and getting as uncomfortable as I could knowing I would learn more about myself. This trip made me want to extend my trip longer so I could learn more about each person in our group. And what helped me with all of this were the people in our group, whether they know it or not each one of them taught me something and helped me become a better person and for that I am so grateful.

I can’t say enough about this trip and about We Must Dash. Not only was Bali Reset a trip full of adventure, new experiences, relaxation and exploring but Stephanie and Brandon literally are the best business owners and look out for their travelers. They are there for you 24/7. Like when my ATM card got sucked into the ATM machine in Ubud, Steph was there to re-assure me everything would be ok or when someone in our group lost her cell phone in the taxi, Steph was able to get it back (she is literally a miracle worker) and when I got really sick in Sanur, Steph showed up to my room with medicine. She is the ultimate trip Mom.

thumbnail_IMG_1229.jpg

People say they don’t have the time or money to travel or we just simply get to wrapped up our everyday life that we forget there is so much out there in this world, what I’m here to say is you need to put yourself first. Traveling is one of the best things a person can do for themselves. It clears your head, fills your heart, and gives you a new perspective on life and this world.

The whole trip was magical but you really do learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together or a car or ferry ride for that matter. I learned a lot on this trip and one of my favorite moments was learning about the people in our group and singing out loud with each other in the car rides. It was like we were having the time of lives, because we were! Hiking Mt. Batur and snorkeling were runners up in my favorite moments if I had to narrow it down. At the end of the day I could sit here and share pictures on pictures and stories on stories, but the best thing I can tell you is to experience a trip like this yourself, you won’t regret it.

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” -Anthony Bourdain

I certainly hope I left something good behind.

Labor Day Weekend

I can’t believe Labor Day weekend is here. It is the first summer I’ve had in a long time that it didn’t consist of work all day (and night). Looking back at it, it flew by and I don’t feel I got to everything on my summer bucket list. While this weekend will consist of trying to get to some of those items on my list, I thought it’d be a good opportunity to promote some fun things to do if you still want to get the most out of summer.

thumbnail_IMG_0021.jpg

One of the places I went to back in July was Panama Rocks in Chautauqua County. While I haven’t been there since I was about 8 or 9 years old it was so much fun taking my niece and nephew and exploring with them. Even though they told me that they would have had more fun with their Uncle, I ignored that comment and made the most of exploring the caves, hiking the trails and looking over the cliffs.

If hiking Panama Rocks isn’t your cup of tea and you want to stay closer to Buffalo, the Zoo offers on Labor Day $5 admission – check out the dinosaurs, Boomerang Island, Mohan the baby rhino and Toni the baby sea lion or hit up the waterfront and take in the beautiful views and kayak, paddle board, bike or walk around the area.

Whatever it is that you decide to do I hope you spend this holiday weekend laughing, loving and creating new memories.

thumbnail_IMG_8280.jpg

When I began this blog of mine over six years ago I never imagined the amount of love and passion I would have for the city that I am so lucky to call home. Having always loved this region I didn’t think it would be possible to find deeper meaning, deeper roots and deeper passions that I have come to find, but it has happened and there is so, so much to be grateful for in our region.

Since it is “716 day” I thought I would share my list of favorite (favorite!!) restaurants, venues, activities, events, and people I like to follow. I know I missed A LOT on this list (it’s so hard to think of it all), but take a look. Let me know what are some of your favorite things in the 716 - places you like to go, events you like to attend and people you like to follow.

Western New York may be a small region compared to big cities, but it has a ton of talent, pride and passion to share with visitors and those that are lucky to call it home.

Favorites broken down by category:

Brewery: Resurgence – Have you checked out their new location at 55 Chicago? If not, definitely put it on your list of things to do

Restaurants:

  • Southtowns: Alchemy Wine Bar/The Grange

  • Downtown Restaurants: Marble + Rye, Hearth + Press (especially before a show at Sheas), Hydraulic Hearth (love their outdoor patio in the summertime), Cantina Loco is my favorite spot for guac, and chips and they are my favorite spot for margaritas. Love Wasabi on Elmwood for Sushi

  • Northtowns: Share on Main Street, TCB on Transit Road and Greens on Transit

thumbnail_IMG_8360.jpg

Cocktails – Duende at Silo City is a pretty cool, chill place, Angelica Tea Room, Just Vino on Main Street, Blackbird Cider on Chandler Street, The Terrace at Delaware Park is a beautiful spot as well, those views of Hoyt Lake are BEAUTIFUL.

thumbnail_IMG_7798.jpg

Dog Park: Hands down my Harlie girl loves the Knox Farm – whether its running around at the dog park or walking the trails it’s a happy place for her

thumbnail_IMG_8359.jpg
thumbnail_IMG_8363.jpg

Workout Spot: #REVLIFE is the best life. Any class at Revolution Buffalo is sure to be a fun time. It is my happy place. A place where I take in all the positive vibes that I can. I also love Love in Motion yoga. Kate and Kath bring those feel good vibes with every flow

Outdoor spots: Hands down The Outer Harbor is my favorite waterfront spot and a spot that I never get sick of. Whether it’s a run, walk, the views or visiting Tifft Nature Preserve it has a special place in my heart. Delaware Park and Artpark are also places I love to visit outdoors

IMG_5038.jpg

Fun things to do: A fishing excursion with Brookdog Fishing is a blast and I highly recommend for anyone (at any fishing level). The Buffalo Pedal Tours are so much fun, Hatchets & Hops is also a fun place to check out as well as the Silo City tours with Explore Buffalo

thumbnail_IMG_8361.jpg

Coffee Shops: Remedy House, Tipico, Public and Overwinter

thumbnail_IMG_8362.jpg

Favorite places: The Buffalo Zoo (that’s a given; I mean if you know me you know how much I love animals (more than some people)). The Aquarium is another favorite spot. The Science Museum, kayaking, The Buffalo Central Terminal and the Broadway Market

Shops I love to visit: Anna Grace on Elmwood, Mod Nos on Hertel, Winkler & Samuels Wine Purveyors at 500 Seneca, Pegs Hardware

My spots for wings: Nine Eleven Tavern in South Buffalo is a hole in the wall, but the wings are one of the best in town (in my opinion), I am also a fan of Carbone’s on South Park and Duffs

Favorite social media accounts to follow/motivate me, locally here in Buffalo: Buffalo Boss Babes, Christy at Wild Blossom Hollow, Lloyds, The Buffalo Zoo, Adventures are Waiting (Jess Kelly), BKind City, We Must Dash, Indie Twenty (Rachel), Love in Motion Yoga, Balanced Bright Life (Jessica Reagan), West End Interiors, Yoga Steve (Steve Procknal), and Lauren from Rev @liittlelauren

thumbnail_5630E8DC-5D6D-4940-9D85-43B1D7E184AE.jpg

Favorite summer time events: Jack Craft Fair and new this year – Door Open Buffalo/Explore Buffalo, I always try and visit Shakespeare at Delaware Park too, it’s a classic summertime activity in Buffalo. Wines in the Wild at the Zoo is also one I always go to. For me being an event planner I feel like I attend a lot of events not just plan a lot so when a new event is created or its an event I have never been to – that excites me more than a recurring event, unless it has “wowed” me.

My bucket list of things to do before summer is over: Visit the new Explore & More, A hot air balloon ride (this has been on my bucket list for years), learn/try to paddle board – all those years at the Harbor and I never had a chance to do it then, visit Shirt Factory in Medina, and take a class with Ren at Rise Fitness.

WNY BAC - 8th Annual Bookfest, July 13, 2019

IMG_7472.jpg

WNY Book Arts Center (WNY BAC) is located at 468 Washington Street in Buffalo, NY and is one of the coolest places in downtown. Their mission – “To help promote a greater understanding of printing and book-related arts through education, creation, and exhibition for a broad and diverse community.”

It is a great place to visit if you’re looking for something fun to do/learn/support. I had a chance through a Buffalo Bloggers meet up to learn about the organization/business, meet some of the staff and have a hands-on experience in the process of letter pressing. It’s not only a place to go to learn to letterpress, but offers bookbinding, paper making and custom printing opportunities as well as workshops, school programs, professional development, and a shop where you can purchase a variety of postcards, artwork, notebooks and more.

IMG_7499.jpg

If you like books, are interested in learning more or want to check out WNY BAC and see what they are all about, they are hosting their 8th Annual Buffalo Bookfest on Saturday, July 13th from 12-5pm. More details can be found here.

Summertime at Artpark//Free Family Saturday's

A place I enjoy visiting, but don’t go to often is Artpark. Not only does the venue provide beautiful views of the water, fun concerts to attend, but it also has some great creative, interactive events that focus on the cultural arts. Back a few weeks ago, my sister and I took my niece and nephew to the Fairy Festival, an event I haven’t attended before. It was a beautiful day in June and offered a lot of fun activities, from making fairy houses to magic potions and flower crowns, perfect for young kids. You could have tea in a fairy house, dress up as your favorite fairy and let your creativity flow. For only $10/ticket the amount of free activities that were included with the ticket were worth it for us.

IMG_7853.jpg

Since then I’ve been better at staying up to date with events taking place at Artpark so I can plan accordingly with a packed summer schedule (which you are probably familiar with). While known for their popular summer concerts, they also are offering free family events on the following upcoming Saturday’s thanks in part to their sponsor Hyatts.

JULY 6       ART OF TRANSFORMATION

JULY 13     ART OF FANTASY

JULY 20    ART IN WATER

JULY 27    ART OF THE GAME

Each week offers a different theme with a variety of “make and take” workshops as described on their website. It also includes free parking and play spaces making it convenient for families on a budget. For more information on this head to Artpark’s website here.

Doors Open Buffalo

Yesterday with the talents of the Explore Buffalo staff and volunteers, Doors Open Buffalo took place. Offering inspiration and an appreciation for Buffalo’s unique history and architecture through free public access to significant building interiors.

From a visitor stand point I thought it was a great opportunity to visit historical buildings filled with beautiful architecture and so many stories. While walking thru the streets of downtown, it looked like hundreds of people took advantage of this great opportunity. While I didn’t get to visit every place on the list, the ones I did get o visit didn’t disappoint.

Kudos to Explore Buffalo and all the participating buildings for a great day!

Science After Hours/SpaceFest

Guys! Have any of you ever been to the Buffalo Museum of Science, Science After Hours events? A couple of weeks ago my sister and I attended the SpaceFest for Adults as part of the featured events for the museum. The event highlighted everything “space” related - I mean, like, viewing the City of Buffalo from the rooftop to having an opportunity to see the Kellogg Observatory and look through the Lundin telescope. There was a member of the science museum’s astronomy team on hand to tell us about the Kellogg Observatory and also tell us what we were viewing in the telescope (we got to see the sun before it set, which was pretty rad!)

photo thanks to my sister, Amber

Not only was the event fun, you learned more about the solar system, had a chance to be a part of interactive exhibits, could listen to talks taking place, got to see cool views of the City, and you were able to enjoy the museum after hours - for adults only.

just one of the views from the top of the roof deck at the Buffalo Museum of Science

The science museum hosts Science After Hours events almost every month with the next one taking place at Tifft Nature Preserve on June 20th - Tifft at Twilight- an event I attended a couple years ago, its a team effort in accomplishing a treasure hunt on the nature preserve. If you can, check. it. out!

AND if you’d like an opportunity to check out the Kellogg Observatory you can check it out with regular museum admission Wednesday’s (weather permitting) as the museum has extended hours. On Sunday’s you can gain access to the roof deck between 12-3 p.m. (also weather permitting). For all the details on the roof deck and K.O. click here.
