Persistent, creative, fun, self-taught, kind, and organized, these are just a few of the many traits that describe Brian Muffoletto and Nick Napierala, who make up The Bakers Men Buffalo . Together for seven years, they both are school teachers by day (Brian, a 2nd Grade Teacher at Eggert Rd Elementary in Orchard Park and Nick, an Elementary Art Teacher at Elma and Wales in Iroquois) and creative cookie masters by night.

Creativity can be found in any aspect of your life

Catch my story with them below on how The Bakers Men Buffalo got started and what they’re doing now.

It all started with their love to host parties. One day after scrolling through social media looking at cookie videos Brian and Nick decided to try something new for their upcoming Easter guests and created some sweet cookie desserts. After teaching themselves through videos online they presented their cookies to their guests and while they looked great, they tasted horrible. Back to the drawing board they gave it a second try for the 4th of July, when the cookies still didn’t taste great, they went back to the drawing board and played with recipes on what they liked and didn’t like. After almost a whole year they came back to their friends and family on the following Easter (in 2019) and presented their new cookies that not only looked amazing, they tasted great!

Their signature vanilla almond flavor is not too sweet but not bland, it’s the perfect combination of deliciousness with soft frosting that compliments a soft, but light crunch cookie. In 2019 during this 3rd attempt at perfecting their recipe they were approached by a casting agency for the Food Network. One of their hashtags is #malebakers so it caught the attention on social media of the show. After an intensive interview process and months that had gone by Brian and Nick were surprised to hear back from the agency in August of 2020. As the months went by they officially launched their business, Nick designed their logo, including the Buffalo Skyline in it, they created their website and did their first business order for a friend of theirs, Genevie, who owns Designing Dish in East Aurora, all while they were busy creating a commercial kitchen in their basement that is NYS Inspected.

Because of work scheduling Nick had to step back from being on the Food Network but Brian moved forward and competed against four other bakers. The show aired in November of 2020, and Brian’s cookie theme was Christmas of the Future and his design was Space Christmas, think a Christmas Tree on the moon, Santa and Gingerbread. Competing in the first round the judges thought Brian’s cookie flavor was to safe and he came back to Buffalo but not without making new friends from the show and gaining a lot of experience from that opportunity.

As they continue to have fun, they run a successful business and I’m impressed with the motivation both men have with how they self-taught themselves in recipe development, web design, food photography, social media and much more. They are persistent, learn from their mistakes and keep going. All while using the power of creativity, sharing what they do and applying what they know.

Brian and Nick do all sorts of fun cookie orders, from Christmas themes to their signature Buffalo cookies, to custom orders, there is very little they can’t do in my opinion. They have over 700 cutters that are all organized and categorized so if you have an idea they are sure to be able to create it. They also host fun cookie classes in collaboration with other local business owners like Meet and Eat Charcuterie, Lago, Six Friends Cabernet, Shea’s and Designing Dish, and they’re not done, they have a bucket list of people they’d love to collaborate with. If you’re looking to get a hold of them the best way to contact them is through email: thebakersmenbuffalo@gmail.com

When I asked them my signature question - What do they love about Buffalo ? They replied .. the City of Good Neighbors is true here in Western New York. We meet people on social and events and we get to collaborate with them. The art community is incredible and there is always something to do and learn, it gives us an appreciation of where we live. We love the seasons too!

When I asked them what there favorite part of their business is they said they enjoy meeting the people they do business with, they become like part of the family. They also enjoy being able to bounce ideas off of each other and create a theme and from there a design and color palette, textures, playing with images and text. They are constantly learning and looking at new ideas through other cookiery’s on social media.

When you run a business on top of having full time jobs you still have to find time to have a work/life balance. You also have to invest in yourself, especially when you offer a quality product that not only looks good but tastes good, you can’t sell yourself short. You need to charge your worth and learn your limits, two great pieces of advice as I close out this sweet feature on two talented, creative men.

Women Who Move Buffalo - Kailey from Buffalo Charcuterie Creations

A few weeks ago I came across Buffalo Charcuterie Creations on IG and was immediately impressed with the creative business, so ideally for a friends birthday I planned to celebrate with a picnic in the park that featured F&B from local establishments in the area. It was the perfect opportunity for me to order a charcuterie box.

the picnic not only included the charcuterie box, but wine from Winkler & Samuels & macarons from Fairy Cakes

I contacted Kailey on IG on a Tuesday I believe it was with hopes she would be able to put something together on short notice for that Friday and she was able to! She asked me if I had any requests for the box and we finalized the details on time and place. She dropped off directly to my door step that Friday morning and everything was so easy.

When I got the box the presentation was amazing, everything was organized, labeled and it was what every event planner dreams of (you understand if you’re a planner). Everything in our box was delicious, some items I’ve had before (hello, Brie!) and some were brand new, but everything was fresh and tasted so good.

Here is what was in the box:

  • Brie

  • Eggplant Garlic Spread

  • White Cheddar

  • Red Pepper Spread

  • White Stitton Cheese with Lemon Peel

  • Manchego

  • Goat Cheese with Honey (this was so, so good!)

  • Smoked Gouda

  • Cucumber

  • Salami

  • Fig

  • Crackers

  • Baby grapes

  • Asst. Nuts

Our box was for 2 people, cost $40 and was more than enough food (we had leftovers!) and it was worth every penny.

I had such a good experience that I reached out to Kailey to ask if I could feature her on my site because I want everyone to know what an awesome person and business she has. Check out my Q&A with her below.

When did Buffalo Charcuterie Creations begin?

Buffalo Charcuterie Creations began during Coronavirus quarantine, April 2020 to be exact.

How did it all get started? What made you want to start this business?

It started when my mom wanted to do a charcuterie board for a social distance hang out with her girlfriends but didn’t want one large board that everyone touches. We searched the internet for personal boxes and ended up making each lady a box to enjoy themselves without spreading germs!

Are you a Buffalo Native?

Buffalo native! Born and raised in Amherst, NY

What is your favorite part of creating the charcuterie boxes?

My favorite part of creating the boxes is the artistic and creative ability each one gives me. There is no right or wrong way to construct a charcuterie board/ box and while creating each one I always think of a new layout or item to add.

Do you have a favorite cheese?

My personal favorite cheese is Brie- especially with some honey drizzled on top!

Is there a spread or fruit that you must always put in the boxes?

My favorite spread that I love to put in every box is a whipped goat cheese and honey with red pepper flakes sprinkled on top. That has gotten great feedback from many so that’s a must for my boxes now! I also love to always try and add cucumbers to compliment the spreads that are added.

What is your go to for food items in the boxes?

My go to lately has been smoked Goudas, salami and artichokes. I’m sure those will change soon but for now those are always on my shopping list when grabbing ingredients. Another favorite go to during the summer season has been cheeses featuring lemon- they’re more of a dessert cheese and such a great touch in a summer box!

Where do you find your creativity?

As crazy as it sounds most of my creativity came from TikTok (I guess that’s 2020 in a nutshell for ya!) When I was furloughed in the beginning I had a lot of time on my hands and once I stumbled on some charcuterie videos I was fascinated and was motivated to start playing around and trying to construct some boards for friends and family.

Each box you create is different, how/what inspires you?

Each box is definitely different and the main thing that inspires me is the season! I swear every time I go to the grocery store there is a new fruit or vegetable in season. I love to mix it up to compliment the time of year and also to keep up with trends of what food people are loving that I see on social media’s.

What do you love most about Buffalo/WNY?

My favorite thing about Buffalo is that even though it is a large city it has a way of feeling small and welcoming at the same time. I love always going somewhere and probably running into someone you know.

What is your favorite & fun part of owning your own business?

My favorite part of starting my own business is definitely being able to make my own hours. Depending on the day I can get spurts of motivation at 8 am or some days not till 4 pm. Making my owns hours leaves me a lot of flexibility and allows me to still create time with family and friends during the fun (short) summer months!

What types of events, parties, etc. are the boxes best for? Each order is customizable, how big of a charcuterie box can you cater to for those interested in ordering from you?

The boxes are best for so many events- from girls night, date night, birthday parties, etc. I have made personal boxes for just one person to enjoy on a night for themselves. I have also gotten great feedback that the boxes are perfect for date night, picnics, anniversaries and girls nights. I have also expanded from just the boxes to the larger charcuterie boards. I think these boards would be perfect for larger parties. I have a wedding order coming up this September which includes 6 larger boards to be spread around the reception. Very excited for that opportunity!

What has been the most popular item your customers request?

The most popular items that people have requested multiple times has been the whipped goat cheese with honey. I have  also had a great feedback on adding in a dessert style cheese so it is now something I always try to add.

What has been the most unique item your customers have requested?

The most unique item I have had so far for me was figs! I had never really used or eaten figs before someone requested some in a box. After that I loved them and now I enjoy adding them every chance I get! I am sad they have such a short season because they’re such a beautiful and delicious fruit.

If people want to order, what is the easiest way to do so?

The best way to order is through my Instagram @bflocharcuteriecreations. For those who don’t have an Instagram they are always welcome to email me at KED2696@gmail.com

What has been your most memorable client or part of running Buffalo Charcuterie Creations so far? and why?

The most memorable part of Buffalo Charcuterie Creations so far is meeting all the new people and being able to connect and network all over WNY. This business has given me the opportunity to travel to many places around that area that I normally wouldn’t before.

From The Water Straight To Your Plate - Fresh Oysters & More from Shuck Shack

thumbnail_IMG_4454.jpg

A few weeks ago a couple friends and me paid a visit to one of the newest restaurants in town, Shuck Shack. Located at 301 Ohio Street, right on the water, Mike Tobin (owner) and his team have created something real good in Buffalo. Bringing fresh oysters straight from the water to your plate, you can’t go wrong. There are a handful of seafood and beverage options to choose from, and if you aren’t into the oysters, clams or ahi tuna to name a few, they have classic American food staples like burgers, fries and hot dogs.

With the deliciousness of the food you really can’t go wrong. You get the high end quality of food without paying those typical high-end prices. When I went with my friends we got a bunch of items and shared them.

Our Order || 2 dozen oysters | the classic, french fries | shrimp cocktail | and the ahi tuna poke special

Everything was so dang good! Those lobster claws looks pretty good too, and are on my list to try during my next visit.

The atmosphere was great - I mean you can’t pass up a place by the water, with good food and drink, it screams summertime good vibes and in my opinion is one of hottest places in town right now. The staff were very personable, attentive and were doing everything they could to accommodate their guests. They were cleaning, social distancing and had face masks on the whole time I was there. You could see safety was top of mind, which is nice to see during the times we’re living in.

Props to Mike for his hustle, passion and dedication to bring something special to Buffalo. You hit it out of the park.

Shuck Shack Hours are Friday’s & Saturday’s 12-9 p.m. & Sunday’s 12-6:30 p.m. If you don’t feel comfortable venturing out you can also order online and take home.

Summertime at Artpark//Free Family Saturday's

A place I enjoy visiting, but don’t go to often is Artpark. Not only does the venue provide beautiful views of the water, fun concerts to attend, but it also has some great creative, interactive events that focus on the cultural arts. Back a few weeks ago, my sister and I took my niece and nephew to the Fairy Festival, an event I haven’t attended before. It was a beautiful day in June and offered a lot of fun activities, from making fairy houses to magic potions and flower crowns, perfect for young kids. You could have tea in a fairy house, dress up as your favorite fairy and let your creativity flow. For only $10/ticket the amount of free activities that were included with the ticket were worth it for us.

Since then I’ve been better at staying up to date with events taking place at Artpark so I can plan accordingly with a packed summer schedule (which you are probably familiar with). While known for their popular summer concerts, they also are offering free family events on the following upcoming Saturday’s thanks in part to their sponsor Hyatts.
