A Healthy Treat!

photo 5 (2) New to the Elmwood area, Newbury Street is a healthy café offering salads and organic teas. The produce is from local farms and is absolutely delicious! Probably my new favorite spot in town, there is nothing like it. If you're looking for a good salad check this place out. It is on the pricier side, but the portions you receive in my opinion are worth it. A small knit café on the corner of Hodge and Elmwood, this is a great spot to go for lunch and people watch on Elmwood.

Tequila Happy Hour

I've never been to Don Tequila on Allen St. so when I heard about the place some of my coworkers and I did a little happy hour there a couple weeks back. Greeted with an Hola!  its a nice little place to go, the margaritas are yummy and the food is good. It does get busy in there during the dinner hour, so be prepared to wait a little bit. A little less pricier than Cantina Loco if you're on a budget and love Mexican food check them out. -B

The Washington Market

A new place that I visited this past week was The Washington Market located on Ellicott St. between Seabar and Maureen's Florist. The market offers delicious lunch wraps, sandwiches and salads and is also home to a little grocery mart for some of your everyday needs. One of my new favorite spots downtown. Check them out sometime! -B

Happy Cinco De Mayo!! Today is a great day to celebrate some delicious margarita's at Cantina Loco! The month of May for me is a month to continue to get things done. By that I mean spring cleaning, organizing, traveling at the end of the month, training for the half marathon next month, trying new things & visiting new places {Newbury Street & The Boat House specifically} and kick starting a variety of events that are coming up throughout the summer that I have a part in.

What are some things you are looking forward to this month?

Sweet Treats

rice 5 Have you seen the commercial running on television showing the Mom making rice krispy treats with her kids, but in the shape of eggs. Well whether you have or haven't, in the Easter spirit my niece and I made them over the weekend.

In my first ever attempt to make rice krispy treats I picked up all the necessary ingredients: Marshmallows, Rice Krispy cereal and M&M's.

rice 2riceMost of you probably know how to make rice krispy treats, but in any case, first take 3 tablespoons of margarine or butter and melt in a microwavable bowl. Then take the marshmallows and in the same microwavable bowl with melted margarine or butter cook on high for 1 minute or until they are melted. Once melted add three cups of rice krispy's and mix together. My niece added in the M&M's while I was stirring all the ingredients together. You can then spread the rice krispy treats onto a cooking pan and serve or for the Easter holiday shape into eggs and put M&M's inside for an "extra" sweet treat. Enjoy!

Bacchus!

bacchus 3 The second stop I made for restaurant week was at Bacchus. Located on the corner of Franklin and Chippewa, I've always heard friends say how much they enjoyed this place, but I had never been there to eat before. The bar is "roomy" and has enough space to make you feel comfortable as you wait for your table and the live band that performs on the first Friday of each month was something my friends and I didn't expect. The valet service is also a plus for when you don't want to try and find parking downtown or pay to park in the ramp.

The food was delicious, everything from the calamari to the ahi tuna and baked apple pie was amazing. The service again though was a little slow. It wasn't as bad as it was at Boss, but tables that came in after us were served before us and we had to flag down our waiter a couple of times.

I however would definitely go back as its a nice, fancier place to go before going to see a show at Shea's or other special events  downtown. They also have a private banquet area for bigger and/or private parties.

Have you been? What do you think? What are some of the restaurants you went to for local restaurant week? Any "must go-to spots?" Let me know!

Buffalo's Original Steak & Seafood

boss5 Last week for Local Restaurant week I didn't get to check out all the places I wanted to, but I did get to have dinner at a couple of new places I haven't been to yet. With that being said I thought today and tomorrow I would give my reviews on the restaurants I went to.

Today I'm talking about Boss {Buffalo's Original Steak & Seafood}. Boss is located where Fiamma Steakhouse used to be on Hertel Ave. by Starin. Being that it was local restaurant week my friends and I made reservations in advance and grabbed a glass of wine at the bar before going to our table. While I knew the restaurant was under new management the décor for the most part had stayed the same. The overall experience from service to food to décor I thought it was "eh, ok.".

The service wasn't the best, it was kind of slow {we had 6:30pm reservations and didn't leave until 10:30pm!}. Granted my friends and I were talking, but there were times when we looked at each other like where is our food, where is the bill. The food overall was just ok too. I wasn't impressed. We all ordered the chopped salad which was really good, and my friends all had steak and I ordered the salmon. The salmon was plain, it didn't have a lot of taste to it and for the steak, the seasoning was strong and spicy. I honestly preferred the old Fiamma over Boss.

Don't get me wrong I don't like giving bad reviews and I'm by no means a food critic, but I like to give my honest opinion and being that the restaurant wasn't busy {not all the tables were filled with people} I don't know why it was so slow. I know the owners of Boss also own Bambino Bar & Kitchen and I've only ever been there for a couple drinks so I can't compare if it was an "off" day or not.

Have you been there? What do you think?  While the first stop on my restaurant week wasn't that great make sure to see tomorrow's review I have on Bacchus.

A narrow view by the creek

IMG_6405 Located on Main Street in Williamsville is Creekview Restaurant, a nice restaurant where you can go and sit at the bar for drinks or make a reservation for a casual dinner. My family and I went there for my birthday and it was pretty nice. The parking lot is a little packed as it is shared with the other plaza shops, but the food and customer service was great. A little packed inside I felt like a table of 6 should have been put off in another area other than the main room. Sometimes I felt like we were more in the way than being guests. the restaurant has a lot of charm and character though, I suggest it for someone looking for a local restaurant to go to with their family or children. The menu along with their children's menu offer a variety of options which is nice to see. If you're ever in Williamsville and looking for a casual place to go check them out.

Whiskey and Vera

vera I finally had the chance to check out Vera Pizzeria. I loved the quant atmosphere, music and décor. They have delicious food { I had the salmon and Lauren had the lobster mac n cheese } and strong drinks - specifically the specialty drinks with whiskey in them. Our waitress was friendly and informative and I loved the bar area. Prices are a little higher than your normal dinner and drinks, but it is well worth it. I would definitely go back for a happy hour.

A Little BBQ Action

dino bbq 1 Dinosaur BBQ made its way to Buffalo in the beginning of February and drew a big crowd {and still does}. For some this is a whole new experience to the world of BBQ and for others they are familiar because they have made the way down the 90 to Rochester to enjoy it. Last week my coworkers and I went on a work outing and I was able to see what all the hype was about. First, I loved the décor, the art work, the Buffalo memorabilia on the walls, the over all set-up was great. Now onto the food, it was good, really good! I had an original pulled pork sandwich and one chicken wing. Maybe its because I don't eat BBQ a lot, but the food was really good and our waitress was very helpful, she explained the menu to us and answered all of our questions. If you love BBQ food or just want to go for the experience I highly suggest you check it out. If going around popular times {lunch, dinner} be patient as it may be crowded. Next time I go, I have to check out the bar area.

If you've been, what do you think - is it what your expected?

A Taste of Japanese Culture

sato 7 sato 9

New on Elmwood sits SATO restaurant - a new modern Japanese Cuisine. Walking past the window you would think this is a small restaurant, but there is plenty of seating up the short staircase in the back. Upon entering you are welcomed by a beautiful fireplace and bar. Working with the Japanese Culture Center of WNY, Inc. Sato offers delicious food and drink options along with the opportunity to teach you about the Japanese culture and language. This restaurant isn't like your typical Japanese restaurant that you find around WNY, the food is fresh, the atmosphere is relaxed and it reminded me when I was in Japan a few years ago. Reasonably priced, If you like to try new things or just like Japanese food make sure to check Sato out. Located next to Spot coffee on Elmwood Ave.

pb1450 The Buffalo Zoo's annual winter event, Polar Bites 2014 took place last week Thursday at the Buffalo Convention Center. The night was filled with restaurants, wineries and breweries from all over Western New York. People from all over the area came to eat, drink and bid on a handful of auction items that all go to benefit the Buffalo Zoo. In return the Buffalo Zoo provided an armadillo, snake, blue tongue lizard and some other smaller animals on hand for guests to learn more about. Also on hand was a live band and DJ (Spooky Business) for entertainment. Super Bowl Foods

superbowl 2014 With the Super Bowl this Sunday I thought I would post my top picks for what I will be snacking on {I hope Morgan isn't reading this post today!}

1. Guacomole - its easy to make and is one of the "healthier" options

2. Pizza! My favorite is cheese and banana peppers! Yum! Did you know delivery sales of pizza spike the most during close Super Bowl games - just a little fun fact thanks to {http://pizza.com/fun-facts}

3. Chicken Wings! If you're from Buffalo and aren't eating chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday than I'd like to meet you!

4. Soft pretzels {with little to no salt} and cheese.

5. Beer and for you whiskey drinkers {Jack Daniels}

What are some of your must have food and drink items to have during the Super Bowl? Whatever you're doing for the big game, be safe, don't drink and drive and have fun!

Go Broncos!

Savoy Buffalo

Classy, cool and a little mysterious; those are words I would use to describe Savoy Buffalo {149 Elmwood Avenue}. I've been meaning to check out this place for a while now, so Lacey and myself had dinner and drinks their on Saturday night. While it is smaller than what I expected it, the décor, staff and live music were great! We sat right by the window so we could people watch on Elmwood while sipping on our wine and Jack and ginger's. It was a relaxing atmosphere, reasonably priced...my Jack and ginger was $6 - I thought it was going to be more like $10, so that was a nice surprise. If ordering food try their Deviled Eggs {that's what their known for}. Lacey had the pulled pork sandwich {which she said was good} and I ordered the chopped salad {picture is below}and mac n' cheese. Savoy is definitely a place I would go back to for drinks and a good time.

A locally owned Creperie

Love breakfast food, but tired of ordering the same old thing; eggs, pancakes, French toast? Locally owned, Break' N Eggs Creperie  {located at 5235 Main Street in Williamsville} offers a small "diner like" feel with a touch of country flare to the décor. Having been my first time there, my friend Kate and I went mid- morning and there was a 25 minute wait, but it was worth it. This restaurant is the perfect place to go if you're looking to switch up your breakfast spot. You have the opportunity to create your own crepes or you can order one that has a variety of meat, salmon or fruit fillings.

If you're one who doesn't do well with change don't fret, they do offer traditional items such as eggs, pancakes and other sides like sausage and bacon, but if you do pay a visit I highly recommend trying the crepes- live a little, I mean, what's the point in going to a creperie if you don't have a crepe.

Enjoy!

I can cook!

I will say I can cook a few generic things - mac n' cheese, soup, and eggs to name a few. I can even make a good salad and sandwich, so when I found this recipe on A Beautiful Mess I thought I should try it, especially because it is very easy clean up. Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 1 box linguine {I used regular spaghetti noodles}
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 sprigs basil leaves
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced {I used pre minced garlic in a jar}
  • 2 cups Vegetable stock
  • 2 1/2 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes {Add a little more if you like it spicier}
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon chopped chives
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • salt + pepper

In a large pot add all of the ingredients together excluding the feta cheese and salt and pepper.

oppr2

oppr1

{ A combination of all the ingredients together }

Once in the pot, bring to a high boil and stir occasionally. After about 5 minutes on a high boil bring down to a low boil and stir occasionally for another 5-7 minutes or until noodles are al dente. Most to all of the liquid should be gone. Stir one last time to get all the flavors mixed together. Top with feta cheese and salt and pepper.

You can serve warm or cold. If you'd like, add chicken to get some protein in your meal as well.

oppr

This recipe was super easy, I had leftovers for days and it was easy clean up. If you're like me you will enjoy this dish.

Enjoy!

#BuffaloLinks

buffalolinks1.2 Its the second day in the new year and with that comes a lot of people {hopefully} still sticking to their New Year's resolutions. Some of the common ones are losing weight, being healthy or being more organized. I think some of the links this week can help you stay on track with your resolutions.

1. Black Dot Record Boutique - I don't know what it is, but I enjoy record shops and boutiques. Something about the "hipster" and "old-school" feel makes me enjoy looking around at what music they have to offer.

2. I am a big list person - I have lists of multiple things - goals, to-do lists, etc. One place on the must check out list this year is going to Vera Pizzeria. I've heard multiple reviews some good, some bad, so I want to check it out for myself and see how it is.

3. I will be the first to admit {& so will my family and friends} when I say I have to learn to relax a little bit more. With that being said I want to incorporate more yoga into my exercise. I tried it once last year and thought it was ok, but I definitely want to check out Bikram Yoga in Williamsville, I've heard a lot of positive things about this place.

4. Let's face it, we probably all could be a little more organized in our lives, whether its paper documents, clothing and shoes, pictures or toys having the right storage and organization system would help us alleviate time we take to search for things and do things we would rather enjoy doing. Creative Storage of Buffalo has a variety of services and organization tips to help any of us get more organized in 2014.

5. Another goal of mine {& maybe yours as well} is to run a little more this year. I ran my first 5k race last year and I would love to complete a half marathon this year, so a great website to help me prep for this is Buffalo Runners. They have a list of races {from 5ks to marathons} that will help me prepare for my goal this summer.

Whatever your goals or resolutions are this year, I wish you the best of luck to sticking to them.

Have a great Thursday!

A place that has it all

A couple weeks ago I went on a wine tour with friends and we made a stop at one of my favorite spots that has it all ... Becker Farms. Offering wine tasting at Vizcarra Vineyards, a tasteful amount of brews at Becker Brewing, a shop that offers jams, fudge, baked goods, fruits, vegetables all while surrounded by beautiful scenery, it makes it a place to visit all year round - not just during the fall season.

Becker Farms is also known to be a great spot for those looking for a wedding venue or event space. They also offer activities such as; a concord stomp, hayrides and school tours. A place that offers a lot of variety.

Have you been? Do you like? Don't like? Let me know in the comments section below.

Red Red Wine

tr When it comes to great places to go for wine, my friend Nicole and I are on it! It doesn't have to be restaurant week to go to Tappo on Ellicott St. Tappo offers great deals on food and wine throughout the year ... $15 bottles, who can beat that? and with a great rooftop patio, you can see the city skyline, making it one of the hottest spots to go in the warmer months. The service is quick and more importantly the staff is friendly and personable and the décor is amazing. If you love wine - red, white or blush check them out.
